If you would like important information on how to protect yourself from Diabetes, Heart disease, Obesity, Gout, Liver disease, and even Mercury toxicity please keep reading. In this month's newsletter we will discuss a very dangerous substance and one that is overlooked by most people because it seems so unthreatening. The substance of which I speak is High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). This sweetener was developed in the 1970's by the food industry and was first used insodas, processed foods, breads, pastas, and cereals. This is when the true obesity epidemic began in America. Two-thirds of the adult American population is overweight and more than one-third are clinically obese. Thirty percent of our children are overweight.

More and more research is showing the dangers of HFCS and because the bad press HFCS is receiving the food industry is feeling the pressure and trying to change their name to simple Corn Sugar for labeling purposes. I will show you in this newsletter how this sweetener will damage your health. It is more than obesity we are talking about here. This stuff may cause permanent damage to your health. Many researchers have linked the growing obesity rate in America to the rise of high fructose corn syrup.

High fructose corn syrup is made by highly refining corn syrup to convert it into a product that is 55% fructose and 45% glucose. This process so enhances the sweetness of the HFCS that it becomes 2.3 times sweeter than glucose.

Diabetes

Studies have found that high-fructose diets induce insulin resistance, a condition in which insulin becomes less effective at lowering blood sugar levels. Insulin resistance was discussed in my December newsletter. Insulin resistance is a pre- diabetic conditions caused by poor diets high in refined carbohydrates.

Note the rapid rise in diagnosed cases of Diabetes since the 1970's and since the 1990's the rise in Diabetic cases is even more dramatic. There is no doubt that Diabetes in America is becoming epidemic.

The chart below shows the consistent rise in HFCS consumption and Diabetic "End Stage Renal Disease.

Continued consumption of HFCS is leading millions down the road to Diabetes and all the serious health complications that come with being a diabetic.

Cardiovascular Disease

Studies show the ingestion of HFCS will elevate triglycerides and CRP levels both of which put you at risk of developing arterial disease to include heart disease and stroke. HFCS consumption causes a spike in blood sugar which causes the pancreas to secrete insulin to normalize the sugar levels. Consistently high blood insulin levels causes inflammation of the arteries leading to more and more cardiovascular disease. Please refer to my December 2011 newsletter for more on insulin levels and cardiovascular disease.

Because HFCS is a major contributor to obesity this becomes another major factor in developing heart disease. There is no doubt about the correlation between obesity and heart disease.

GOUT

If you have ever suffered with Gout you know just how painful this misunderstood condition can be. Gout is a form of arthritis that is accompanied by sudden, severe joint pain, redness, and swelling that takes place as a result of crystals accumulating in the joints. The part of the body that is most affected by gout is the big toe.

Gout can be successfully treated by restricting the diet of certain foods, eating cherries, drinking cherry juice and eliminating HFCS from the diet.

LIVER DAMAGE

High Fructose Corn Syrup is converted into fatty acids in the liver, which can cause elevated triglycerides and lead to fatty liver disease. Some estimates show that one-third of all Americans are now suffering from fatty livers. Insulin resistance, elevated blood glucose levels, diabetes, and hypertension (high blood pressure) are all related to fatty liver disease.

Simply put, diets high in HFCS will damage your liver!

Mercury Contamination

Mercury is the third most toxic substance known to man. Researchers found that nearly 50 percent of samples of high fructose corn syrup were contaminated with mercury. Probably the highest exposure that most Americans have to mercury is from dental amalgams used in filling teeth. I do recommend to my patients removal of these mercury amalgams from their teeth, avoiding the types of fish that are known to contain high levels of mercury, and now we must avoid the HFCS as well to be safe.

Many of the products aimed at our children are loaded with high fructose corn syrup. I'm sure you can see the problems which lie ahead if they are raised on these types of processed food and drink.

High fructose corn syrup is not the fructose found in fruits. HFCS is a very dangerous chemically altered substance. When you eat fruit you are also ingesting fiber, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other natural substances that all work together to provide the body with the correct balance of nutrients. The human body is not meant to deal with huge amounts of fructose. The result of this overexposure is development of diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease.

Watch the labeling on your processed foods for HFCS, or better still just avoid processed foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables have not HFCS! You never have to look at a label to see if there is any HFCS in broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, kale, apples, bananas, or carrots. Get the point! EAT NATURAL-----AVOID PROCESSED FOODS, they are laden with not only HFCS but many other very dangerous chemicals that damage your families health.

Keep in mind that the food industry is starting to change labels and call HFCS, Corn Sugar. They are beginning to understand the consumer is becoming educated about their dangerous products and they will do anything within the law to fool you. I will keep you informed when I find they are playing tricks with their labeling.

LET'S PROTECT OURSELVES

Tips to protect your-self against the danger of excess fructose (HFCS) include:

  • Avoid all sweetened soft drinks. Consider switching to an alternative, such as sparkling water, herbal tea, or green tea (stick to home-brewed teas, since most commercially available bottled tea is brimming with HFCS).
  • Read product labels carefully. Avoid any products containing "high- fructose corn syrup" or fructose. Fruit juices—even unsweetened juices— contain fructose and should not be consumed in excess. Fruit juice diluted with sparkling water is delicious and contains less fructose than undiluted juice.
  • Try using the natural non-caloric sweetener stevia extract in your coffee, tea, or homemade desserts.

Final Thoughts

Please understand HFCS is literally in thousands of products on the market today. Take the time to check labels to determine if your favorite foods products are sweetened with this dangerous substance. If they are take the time to find a safer product, free of HFCS, to replace what you are currently using. Avoiding HFCS will make a substantial difference in your long-term health.
