"To Salt or not to Salt", are you confused like most Americans? We hear a lot on this subject and most of us are not sure what to think about the subject of salt and how it affects our health.

The news reports on studies that condemn salt consumption and even tells us that the government may intercede and force restrictions on salt within the food industry and put limits on the salt that can be used in restaurants. We hear of other studies stating that this salt phobia is blown out of proportion and that salt can be good for you but use caution. I have even read articles that claim that millions of people have died due to consumption of too much salt, leading to high blood pressure, and eventually heart attack and stroke.

Many of you reading this newsletter have been told by your doctors that you must avoid salt if you want to remain healthy. So I do understand how most of you could be confused on the subject and so you probably error on the side of low-salt and even no-salt diets. After all, you must keep your doctor happy!

But what if what you, and your doctor, have been told about salt is completely wrong? What if responsible salt consumption is actually important for the maintenance of good health?

Let's look at a brief history of salt. Salt is found throughout the world in two forms: sea salt and rock salt. For thousands of years salt has been used as a preservative and in ancient times it was a much sought-after substance. Salt was a valuable trading commodity. Wars have even been fought over it.

Human beings cannot survive without an adequate amount of salt. Salt is composed primarily of sodium and chloride and it is the sodium balance that is so important to the cells of our bodies. It is impossible to balance the body's hormonal system and immune system without adequate salt intake.

It is imperative that we get the right kind of salt!

Most people, doctors included, do not understand the difference between refined salt and unrefined salt. Just as there is a difference between refined and unrefined sugar and flour, there is a big difference between refined and unrefined salt.

Refined salt has been put through harsh mechanical and chemical procedures and what is left after refining should be considered poison to the body. Unrefined salt contains over 80 naturally occurring essential minerals. This treasure trove of minerals contains essential minerals such as:

  • Magnesium--- (which is vital for every cell of the body)
  • Boron
  • Calcium
  • Cobalt
  • Potassium
  • Selenium
  • Titanium
  • Zinc

The salt manufacturing industry refers to these minerals as impurities and removes those using sulfuric acid and oxidizing agents to whiten the color. Many salts contain anti-caking agents such as ferrocyanide, ammonium citrate and aluminum silicate.

Make no mistake refined salt can be quite toxic. I must admit that this type of salt can cause numerous health issues. But making a conscious effort to remove most of the salt from your diet is a colossal mistake! Because most people eat diets high in refined processed foods we are missing out on many of the trace minerals our body's need. Chronic illnesses associated with mineral deficiencies include; cancer, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, depression/mood swings, osteoporosis, heart disease, and diabetes.

Most of the misinformation concerning salt in the diet and high blood pressure started from several poorly conducted studies dating back to 1904. The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published the results of a study of 3,681 subjects for a median of 7.9 years that found death rates actually increased as the subjects ate less salt.

Another important study conducted this year (2011) found no evidence that restricting salt resulted in lower rates of cardiovascular disease or mortality. In fact, salt restriction increased the risk of all-cause mortality (death from any cause) in those with heart failure by 259 percent.

One of the most important minerals present in sea salt is magnesium which is one of nature's great anti-hypertensive substances. Unrefined sea salt contains magnesium in an easily absorbable form.

The more we review good studies about trace minerals found in unrefined sea salt the more we understand how crucial moderate amounts of sea salt in our diets can be. Don't be fooled by old outdated ideas about salt. Please understand the important difference between mineral rich unrefined sea salt and the commercially produced white refined (and poisonous) ordinary table salt.

Beyond the Shaker---- Sea Salt

It is important to know that a salt deficiency can also lower the body's pH level ---a measure of the acidity of the body's liquids. One of the main causes for an acidic pH is a low-salt diet and the mineral deficiencies that come with it. I check urine and saliva pH levels on all of my patients and I find that chronically ill patients ALWAYS show a low pH (5.0 to 6.5) whereas health patients consistently show pH numbers ranging from 7.0 to 7.5 (a very health pH number). This is a very easy thing to check at home. You can purchase pH paper at any pharmacy to check your own pH levels in urine and saliva. This is an easy and inexpensive way to see if your body is showing a healthy pH level.

Finally, low-salt diets make it difficult for the body to remove toxic items such as bromine. Bromine toxicity can cause thyroid problems, breast diseases (including breast cancer), and mental abnormalities.


Take an action step today for better health. Empty out all of your salt shakers and throw out all your refined white salt TODAY! Purchase a quality brand of unrefined sea salt (Celtic Sea Salt, Redmond Real Salt, or Himalayan Sea Salt) and replace all the salt in your home with one of these. In summary, most of us like to season our foods with a little salt. Begin today using only unrefined sea salt and give up the guilt you may have had about salt use.
