This month's topic is considered by many a controversial topic. In this newsletter we will discuss the pros and cons of fluoridation. There are those scientists and health care providers that feel that fluoridation is a good thing and they feel cities with fluoridation programs are providing a much needed service for their citizens. Let me just say "I COULD NOT DISAGREE MORE"!Some "so-called" experts continue to defend the use of fluoridation and maintain that it is helping many children to avoid tooth decay in their early development years. They continue to declare that fluoride is safe and insist no one is being harmed by fluoridating our municipal water supplies.

The claim that some younger children (those under 10) can reduce occurrences of dental carries is at best questionable. But even if there is a slight reduction in the number of dental carries in this age group I feel the risks of fluoridation far outweigh any benefit.

Proponents of fluoridation argue fluoride is safe and beneficial, but their arguments are based on bad science and poorly performed scientific studies performed decades ago. Studies, I might add, that have been paid for by industries that are dealing with fluoride waste. Attempts have been made to reproduce these studies by independent scientific groups and the original findings have not been reproducible even with more modern scientific equipment. Many municipalities are beginning to see the dangers of the fluoridation process and have stopped fluoridating their public water supplies. Because fluoride is so toxic it has been banned in several countries. 97% of Western Europe has chosen fluoride-free water.

So let's discuss the safety of our drinking water and explain how fluoride came to be part of our public water supply.

Drinking Water Supply

It is no surprise to anyone that our public water supply has been compromised and it is no longer as clean and chemical free as it once was. Our water supplies contain not only natural contaminants that are bad for our health but also toxic industrial chemicals and pharmaceutical substances that are dangerous.

Although there are many chemical contaminants that are present in our drinking water such as, mercury, lead, arsenic, PCB's, dioxin, and DDT by far the worst

offenders to our health are FLUORIDE & CHLORINE . In this newsletter we will concentrate of the effects of fluoride.

Fluoride

As more and more cities make the decision to add fluoride to their municipal water supply we are seeing increased incidence of serious health conditions. If you are drinking tap water from a municipal water supply it is likely that you are consuming fluoride every day. In addition to the water you drink you may be ingesting additional quantities of fluoride from toothpaste, mouth rinses, food, medicines, showering, and bathing.

Health conditions now associated with fluoride include: osteoporosis and hip fractures, arthritis-like pains and carpal-tunnel syndrome, cancer, thyroid disorders, infertility, Alzheimer's disease, decrease in IQ of children, and premature aging. As you can see from this list fluoride is something that you should make every effort to avoid.

The fluoride added to water supplies is hydrofluoric acid. This compound is actually a chemical byproduct of aluminum, steel, cement, phosphate (fertilizers), and even nuclear weapons manufacturing. It is one of the most caustic of all industrial chemicals. Fluoride is the active toxin in rat poisons and cockroach powder. Several common drugs contain sodium fluoride so check with your doctor if you take medications.

Millions of tons of toxic hydrofluoric acid are produced every year. Because industry realized that it was going to be extremely costly to store and dispose of this material it came up with a very devious plan to not only dispose of it but make money at the same time. Numerous flawed scientific studies, showing that fluoridating our water supplies would provide health benefits to the public, were paid for by these industries. The lobbyist pushed hard for fluoridation and many state and local governments bought into this scheme and mandated that fluoridation be adopted in their cities.

These manufacturing industries are basically using our public water supply as a sewer for industrial wastes. There is huge profit to be made from selling fluoride to municipalities and so this vicious cycle has continued for decades.

Make no mistake; fluoride is almost as toxic as arsenic and more poisonous than lead. Fluoride is found in almost all brands of toothpaste, most bottled water, and even baby formula. Because fluoridation is so toxic it has been banned in several countries and now numerous American cities have rejected its use.

David Kennedy, DDS President International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology made the following statement. "Water fluoridation is the single largest case of scientific fraud, promoted by the government, supported by taxpayer dollars, aided and abetted by the ADA and the AMA, in the history of the planet."

Albert Schatz, PhD Nobel Laureate for discovering streptomycin remarked,

"Fluoridation is the greatest fraud that has ever been perpetrated and it has been perpetrated on more people than any other fraud has."

Last month's "Eating for Health" newsletter explained that Iodine is an element know as a Halide, as is chlorine, bromine, and fluorine. These other halides chlorine, bromine, and fluorine compete with iodine for binding on the cells of your body. Because of this we are seeing iodine deficiencies and low thyroid function as epidemic in our country. Please refer to last month's newsletter for the symptoms of a low functioning thyroid gland.

Of the four halide elements, fluorine, chlorine, and bromine are all toxic to the body and iodine is essential to life itself. When we increase iodine consumption and decrease the other three halides we not only detoxify our bodies we improve our metabolism and help prevent many common diseases.

Make no mistake this is a very important subject for good health and prevention of disease. Do your own research. Google water fluoridation/health risks and read for yourself. See if the risks of consuming fluoride seem acceptable to you. You may or may not be very surprised to find out you have been lied to by government once again.

SO WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THIS FLUORIDE PROBLEM?

Here are some recommendations that you may want to consider to reduce your risk of fluoride consumption.

  • Stop using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Avoid mouth rinses that contain fluoride.
  • Don't let your children have fluoride treatment at school or the dentist.
  • Have a serious discussion with your dentist about fluoride risk. Don't be surprised if his answers are pro-fluoridation. The ADA is on board with continued fluoridation for drinking water.
  • Avoid fluoridated drinking water. If you drink well water you may be OK but if you drink public drinking water you will need to check with your public water department to see if they fluoridate.
  • Add a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water system for the whole house or at least the kitchen sink to use for drinking and cooking.
  • Get a shower filter to attach to your shower head that takes out fluoride and chlorine.

Fluoridation of water does not have FDA approval and is considered by the FDA as an "unapproved drug". The chemicals used for fluoridation (hydrofluoric acid) are not high purity, pharmaceutical quality products. Rather they are byproducts of aluminum and fertilizer manufacturing and contain high concentration of toxins and heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and chromium. All proven to be carcinogens.

Children's sodium fluoride anti-cavity supplements were never found safe or effective by the FDA. They were NEVER EVEN TESTED for safety!

These are the greatest dangers, in my opinion, with long term consumption of fluoride: Brain damage, Bone fractures, Bone Cancer, Thyroid Disorders, and Kidney Disease.

Please give this subject some thought and research and make up your own mind about the safety (or in this case lack of safety) of fluoridation. If you are convinced, like I am, that fluoridation is a dangerous practice then start immediately to reduce the consumption of fluoride for yourself and your family. If your city uses fluoridation to treat your municipal water supply consider contacting the leaders of your community and ask them to get the real facts and STOP the practice of fluoridation immediately!

ORGANIC RECIPE OF THE MONTH

As always I like to include an easy to prepare nutritious organic recipe for those of you who enjoy time in the kitchen. These recipes are not difficult and I know that you will enjoy them. Try to use all organic ingredients whenever possible.

White Bean & Kale Soup with Chicken Sausage

This is great soup instead of chili at your next game party. It is packed with nutrition and easy on the budget. Serves 8 to 10 Ingredients

  • 2 (32-ounce) boxes of organic lows sodium chicken broth, divided.
  • 1 (12-ounce) package of organic chicken or turkey sausage.
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced.
  • Sea-salt and ground black pepper to taste.
  • 7 cups cooked white beans (cannellini, navy or great northern), divided.
  • 1 bunch organic kale, stems and tough ribs removed, leaves roughly chopped.

Heat 1⁄4 cup broth in a large pot over medium heat. Add Sausage slices and cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid has evaporated and sausage is just browned, about 10 minutes more. Add onions, salt and pepper and cook, stirring often, until softened, about 10 minutes more. (Add a generous splash of broth to the pot if onions begin to stick.)

Meanwhile, put 3 cups beans and 2 cups broth into a blender and puree until smooth; set aside. Add remaining broth to sausage mixture to pot and bring to a boil, scraping up any browned bits. Add kale, reduce heat, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until wilted and softened, about 10 minutes. Uncover, add remaining 4 cups beans, bean puree, salt and pepper and simmer until hot throughout, about 10 minutes more.

Garnish with sliced red onions, red pepper flakes or hot sauce, fresh chopped parsley or basil and gluten free croutons.

Beans are a great source of protein and kale is a good source of minerals and anti- oxidants in your diet. By using organic chicken sausage or turkey sausage you are reducing your red meat consumption and the antibiotics and steroids that come with conventional red meats.
